During February of 2019, a towering statue of the 25th president of the United States, William McKinley was removed from the Arcata Plaza in Humboldt, California. Although McKinley’s life was cut short when he was assassinated on September 14, 1901, the statue on the Arcata plaza had been a longstanding icon for over a century. The removal, however, was not without objection and Measure M appeared on the November 2018 ballot. The ballot measure opposing the removal but was voted down by an overwhelming 67% and thus the Arcata City Staff continued with preparations to remove the statue after a break in the rainy weather allowed for it.
